For anyone who wants to ride but not do 180km, park at Vic Square (Elgin Mills and Woodbine) and ride over to Leslie and Elgin Mills, meet at 7:00 and do the loop to Simcoe. Total distance, about 100km. See the BCC Google Group (Thursday and Monday ride RFCs) for details.
What is the expected pace and drop policy?
Well I am figuring on doing it like the last Simcoe scramble. Where we all ride togeather at a reasonable speed, i.e. 28 km/h to and around the south shore of lake Simcoe then at Warden the normal people go at a speed that works for them, probably about 30 (we are heading down hill now) and about five or minutes later the fast guys go and try to catch us before Elgin Mills at which point we ride togeather again.
But I will not be dropping anyone, I may get dropped but I am going as slow as the slowest person in the pack.
I'd like this to be something that anyone with a modest amount of endurance can handle. But if you are doing the full 180, make damned sure you bring your carbs! (Bring fruit, granola bars, or hammer gel and LOTS of water.)
Break for water/carbs at Tims on Dalton Road just south of the lake.
I just remembered, Warden between Davis Dr. and Vivian Rd. is closed due to construction (June 2 to Sept. 1, according to York Region). I may be modifying the route back to Elgin Mills/Toronto slightly - the trip North will not be impacted by the construction.
If the construction is completed and Warden is passable we will go straight down Warden. If consturction is not complete we will go west to Woodbine at Davis and then south to Vivian before heading East back on to Warden.
We can decide what to do on the way North since we will be heading up Warden as far as Vivian before turning east to Cons. 7 per the original plans.
Sorry for any consfussion this may cause.
I want to ride. 5:30 am Tim's. what food and how much water?
Well I recommend either granola bars or bananas or hammer gel. (Or in my case, I try to bring all of the above.) Bring as much water as you can, two water bottles are a good start, since pretty much any road bike should take two. I don't mind a ten second stop to buy additional water at gas stations if its every three or so hours, so plan accordingly.
N.B. If you only have one water bottle cage or bottle, go to the store NOW and get another one, or you are going to be kicking yourself by the time you cross the 90km mark.
(Hey Dan do I get comission?) ;)
its ok i have 2 water cages and a pocket in my jersey!
Sorry anonymous, I think I came across a little harsh just there. But I have first hand experience bonking, happened a week ago actually. Its not a fun experience. See this link to read about my bonked adventure and other life lessons I picked up on a recent 195km ride.
Actually something a pro cyclist recently told me, don't buy just water, its got no carbs, instead when you are out in the country, - where eLoad is hard to get - buy coke and water and mix, or gatorade and water and mix.
At Tim Hortons... use chocolate milk, its a great post recovery drink and its cheap.
Don't forget to eat pasta or other high starch foods on Sunday night and something sweet, fruit with oatmeal, honey, maple syrup, etc. on Monday morning.
Its hard to do this at 4am, but try to drink as much as possible while the tap, or fridge is right within arm's reach.
Hope that helps.
does everyone make it there and back without getting dropped?

next time I hope to be there
I am going to try this again on Sept. 20 (Saturday). More details to follow on my blog. (sk8terdreams.blogspot.com).
