Cancer and Exercise....
Check This Out! Terry, from one of my spin classes e-mailed me this(e-mail and link below):
"I wrote, narrated and produced the items, with material from a cross-country trip that was staggered throughout last year. What the CCS wanted was a series of short videos, each one dealing with a particular cancer, researcher and someone who's benefitted from that research area. They're all approximately 3 minutes in length, so there's not a lot of complicated detail. Rather, they're meant to be a stimulus for discussion and questions. They're also meant to help focus fundraising, i.e., if there's a potential donor who's interested in, for example, ovarian cancer, they can play that segment on a laptop or drop it into a PowerPoint presentation for a specific reference that won't eat up a lot of time.
It was my final project in my contract with the CCS and now that I'm on the hunt for work, it's rather handy to have something like this easily available on the 'net as a work reference. It was also a fascinating trip across the country. We've all heard various conspiracy theories over the years of how there's really a cure for cancer out there that's being held back. First of all, there are more than 200 types and what has worked to either cure or control one type does nothing for other types. Secondly, on this trip, I met a lot of researchers who are incredibly committed (check out Dr. Mark Nachtigal in the ovarian cancer segment) who had strong personal reasons for trying to find cures. These people have no interest in holding back progress. Also, I met a lot of wonderful people who are helping in their own way (i.e., the four sisters involved as volunteers in the clinical trials segment). Without sounding mushy, this process made me very proud to be a Canadian.
As to exercise, the one you'll want to check out is "Life After Cancer: Making Exercise the New Normal". You might also want to check out "Scoring Goals For Cancer Control" which tells the story of Toronto Maple Leaf Jason Blake. As your girlfriend deals with children, she might be interested in "Retinoblastoma: A Family's Story"
Cheers,
Terry

Testing....1,2,3.... Testing....
Dave Silcox has set up his Computrainer (CT) at Lation Fitness Studios (LFS) at Kingston Rd and Victoria Park Ave. The CT will ensure that you get the most out of you pre season power and endurance training and testing. The CT will not only provide a base line Lactate Threshold (LT) approximation but will also allow you to monitor your progress under supervision in a clean, and pleasant environment. If you have been to Watts Up and have your LT numbers the CT set up at LFS is perfect for your early season indoor training. If you have not been to Watts Up see Dave's earlier post. CT is loaded with many real courses to allow you to actually ride a specific profile such as Ironman Lake Placid or IMC as well as a few TT courses for a real LT head banger. Call LFS today at 416 698 9971 to book an appt with Dave. 1st time Complementary second and 3d follow up tests $180.00 inclusive for non LFS members (10% of fee goes to the BCC). Lation Fitness Studios is a proud supporter of BCC.

Watts Up?
After several invitations and a pre-launch tour of the brilliantly laid out and squeaky clean facility I finally did the 1PM training ride at Watts Up on January 8, 09. Watts Up is in a a class that I call "the next generation of boutique training facilities". To quote their comprehensive web site "WattsUp Cycling is Toronto's first individualized power-based cycling program within a group environment. WattsUp Cycling is a science-backed, performance-based training program focused on improving your performance...however you measure performance". And you can bet your calloused butt it is the truth.
Located in an industrial warehouse off of O'Connor Ave., Watts Up is set up with 24 Computrainers (CTs) in 3 rows of 8 all hooked up to lap tops loaded with CTs proprietary 3D software. This type of commitment to your success deserves to be taken seriously.
Gone are the days of sitting on your fancy steed, secured to the trainer hammering away while the family shakes it's collective head and wonders whether the sweat drenched mad person grunting wildly in the basement has at long last lost it totally. Watts Up is a serious place where serious cyclists and tri-geeks can pursue their 2 wheeled passion in a supportive environment, under supervision and with professional guidance. The coaching and testing is done by competent and experienced athletes that actually care about you.
I am fortunate to know Peter Oyler, multisport specialist, from my Ironman days (he was usually finishing the races as I started the marathon). Peter is a coach at Watts Up and an extraordinary asset as well as a class individual. Peter invited me and made sure that I was set up and comfortable before starting us out on the most grueling section of the Ironman Canada course, Richter Pass. Throughout the 1 hour that I rode I could track everything from average wattage output (mine 210 over 1 hour) to the the distance between the 6 riders on a big screen, very cool. The CT is capable of analyzing your efficiency with Spin Scan and other bio feedback essentials that were only available in a few high performance labs until now.
Lactate threshold test is encouraged and is done on site in sterile conditions by Adam Johnston for a reasonable fee. Any serious athlete wants to know his/her numbers (it's a geek thing, don't tell your spouse, just do it). Lactate threshold is one of the best indicators that all of the pounding and time away from your kids soccer practice or ballroom dancing lessons was worth it.
Overall it was an extremely positive experience. I enjoy being with like minded fun loving but serious athletes. Riding is a passion and the ability to ride strongly is a gift that few of us understand or fully develop. Call Peter Oyler at 416 750 3888 and arrange a free introductory ride then call me and share your experience.

Friday Night Long Ride....at the Toronto Athletic Club(TAC)
Hey All,
One of the BCC Members, Bob Carreau has sent me this to post to all...
Quote:
"Info including start date and pricing is on the attached flyer, but basically, as I did last year it's designed to be a structured training program that is also flexible enough to suit your needs - think of a weekly group ride, just indoors! Here's the important info:
-Friday nights starting Jan 9 6-930pm
-at the lovely TAC facilities
-open to non-members
-minimum 4 class commitment
-periodized over 12 weeks split evenly among endurance/power/speed
-heart rate monitor recommended as we'll be doing some very ornery and specific drills
-will feature plyometrics again (after a resoundingly successful introduction last year!) after week 4, so you'll need to bring running shoes to class for weeks 5-12 as well as spinning shoes
- less structured than a traditional spinning class, but there will be plenty to do - let me know if you have specific goals or things you want me to focus on (especially around now as I'm designing the classes)
Other advice that may be helpful:
-you might want to bring an extra jersey to change into mid-ride
-bring on bike and post ride fuel
-bring your own tunes - we swap out the music depending on who's brought what
-coming late/leaving early is ok with me -especially if you haven't done the full 3.5 hours before - lot's of time to ease your way into it
-those of you who have any slides/photos/video of your exploits over the past year - please send or give me a copy at the first ride - I'd love to put together a motivational (aw shucks!) piece for the screens in there!
-bring at least 2 bottles"

Magic #3....Talk about Commitment!
Spin Class was great! We rode 60 Virtual kilometers.
Here is Peter's Synopsis(Outside Ride):
We changed the route to shorten it a bit & to better use the wind to our advantage. Instead of going up Don Mills we turned off Eglington onto Sloan & then weaved our way up thru the Don Mills area & got onto Don Mills from Graydon Hall Drive ? right at the 401. Then we went up Don Mills/Leslie to Bloomington, west to Bayview, around Lake Wilcox to Yonge St in Oak Riges, south to Stouffville SD, East to Leslie & back home.
Stats: 90.82 km from my home (we all road from home), 3hr 17 min, 27.64 average speed (lots of wind & we had to keep waiting), max speed 54.8 kph.
Up north of Hwy 7 there was 2 inches of snow on the ground & the trees were coated in snow. Very pretty. The roads were mainly clear but we did ride thru snow/slush several times & the roads up north were very wet.
I just finished washing my bike. Good ride.
How was the spinning class ?? I take it most of the club was with you getting all sweaty as they weren't out being cold & wet with us.
Peter
PS - Thanks again for a great riding season & a great end of season bash. You're a good guy !
